Little locked in

An off-season creating promise and hope for the future of the Thrashers as this off-season has been one of turn around and change. Today, the Thrashers continued their movement by coming to terms with Restricted Free Agent Bryan Little.

From TSN.ca:

The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed restricted free agent forward Bryan Little to a multiple-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Little, 22, recorded 13 goals and 21 assists in 79 games with the Thrashers last season. The Edmonton, Alberta, native has totaled 50 goals and 51 assists in 206 career games with the club.

Little was selected by the Thrashers in the first round, 12th overall,  of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Many are stating that this could be a major breakout year for Bryan Little. I must admit that I agree with that statement. After registering 31 goals and 51 points in his first – close to – full season in the NHL, things tailed off last year. With the new cast created for October, expect to see bigger and better numbers come from the game Little will put on display with his new teammates.

Avoiding Arbitration

Rick Dudley continues to impress.

This week, the Atlanta Thrashers were able to secure two players acquired via trade to be part of the roster come October.

Both Ben Eager and Andrew Laad, who were acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in separate deals, have both signed with the team thus avoiding their arbitration hearings and likely saving the Thrashers a few dollars on top of it.

The organization is forming into a contender as we watch the changes take place this off-season.  The fanbase must be proud. Knowing that, on black and white, there is a potential playoff roster being constructed means big things for the Southeast Division.

Understand that the one year deals signed are due to the fact that both Eager and Laad will want to see how the city itself fits for their future. Of course, it will benefit the team as well because if either player performs sub-par this year, there are no worries in contract disputes heading into next season.

Eager will earn $965k and Laad’s deal is worth $2.35 million.

I feel that both deals, due to avoiding arbitration, have saved the Thrashers some salary against the cap for this upcoming season.

Eager is a big bodied third liner who is not afraid to drop the gloves and can put some pucks into the back of the net as well.  He scored 16 points in 60 games last season – seven by way of putting the biscuit in the basket. He also made identical dollars last season with Chicago.

Laad, coming off a 38 points season (17 goals) earned $1.65 million last season. GM Rick Dudley expected Laad to receive a significant raise. By offering a $700k raise, the Thrashers avoiding hitting the $2.5 or $3 million cap hit that could have come if Laad opted to go through with his arbitration case.

Both helped the ‘Hawks capture hockey immortality at the end of last season by winning the Stanley Cup.

Low risk / high reward type scenarios here for the Thrashers.  If things do not work out as expected, they shed a little over $3 million off their cap for the 2011-12 season.  But why worry that far into the future?

If healthy, both fill in as valuable third line players – however, we all know how a season plays out.  Slumps, as well as chemistry, will play important factors into how this line up looks on the ice come October.

Yes, Bryan Little and Niclas Bergfors remain un-signed, but have no fear Thrashers fans because with Dudley on board those crossing of the “T’s” and dotting of the “I’s” is right around the corner.

Take Two

There is nothing like securing a strong point within your organization.  Especially when it’s a young promising netminder willing to stay on board and understanding the business side of things to help the team out on a financial basis as well.

If the season started today…

I’ve decided to have a little bit of fun with my blog here at ThrasherTalk.

Instead of giving the player profiles or news, I’ve decided to take a peek at the roster as it is right now and have a bit of fun on some line combinations.

Feel free to argue or debate what I’ve come up with. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Forwards:

Line 1: Bergfors – Antropov – Little
Line 2: Kane – Peverley – Byfuglien
Line 3: Laad – White – Eager
Line 4: MacArthur/Boulton – Slater – Thorburn

Defense:

1st Pair: Enstrom – Hainsey
2nd Pair: Odyua – Bogosian
3rd Pair: Kulda – Sopel/Valabik

Between the pipes:

Chris Mason
Ondrej Pavelec

Thrashers fans, how do you see the line-up turning out for opening night if the season started tomorrow?

Catching Up in Thrasherville

By now you know that there is only one true destination that Ilya Kovalchuk is attempting to head to, and that is the Los Angeles Kings.

Surely, the ATL can breathe a sigh of relief that the one time face of the franchise will not be coming back “home”.  Sigh of “relief” you say? Yes!

For the price tag and turmoil that he caused the organization, his time here has come and gone and since the organization has moved on and created a product that could be fighting for a playoff spot in 2010-11.

Colby Armstrong, Pavel Kubina, Johan Hedberg and Maxim Afinogenov will all be with new teams come October as well.  But, there are some new names to get used to here in Blueland.

Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Laad, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and Chris Mason.

Three forwards, a defenseman and a starting goaltender.  Addition by subtraction if you ask me.

Since, the Thrashers have re-signed Eric Boulton and have hired John Torchetti as an associate coach under Craig Ramsay.

From TSN.ca

ATLANTA — John Torchetti has left the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks to serve as associate coach under Atlanta Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay.

The 45-year-old Torchetti has been an assistant with Tampa Bay, Florida, Los Angeles and Chicago. He was an interim head coach with Florida and Los Angeles.

This will be the fourth city in which Torchetti has worked with new Thrashers general manager Rick Dudley.

“The entire organization would like to wish John well with the Thrashers and all of his future endeavours,” Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a release. “We appreciate all of his work during his three years on staff, including being a part of our Stanley Cup Championship team.”

Rick Dudley taking over has brought many positives to this organization in moving forward. If all gels, this could be a playoff team in the making.

How do the ATL faithful feel about a playoff appearance in 2010-11?

The Sequel?

We know you are out there, down in the ATL pondering all the fantastic moves that new GM Rick Dudley has made this off-season.  We know that hockey is going to be placed on the map permanently this season in Atlanta.

If you don’t think so, then obviously you have not been paying attention.  Well, here comes some news that will ABSOLUTELY get your attention.

Now, before we freak let’s remember that this is simply a rumor but because it has been publicized in Atlanta on local TV stations, we feel that making this report will hopefully add a good luck charm and maybe twist his arm a bit.

Parting Ways

Saying goodbye is always the hardest part of a good relationship, fresh or worn out.

PHILADELPHIA - MARCH 21: Maxim Afinogenov #61 of the Atlanta Thrashers shoots on goal against the Philadelphia Flyers on his way to scoring at the Wachovia Center on March 21, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

For the Atlanta Thrashers, such will be the case on July 1st when free agents to be Colby Armstrong and Maxim Afinogenov will no longer be part of the organization.

Word is that Afinogenov is leaning more and more towards the KHL and Armstrong would like to dive into free agency.

Colby you play a terrific role, but let’s be serious here.  You had a home here with the Thrashers and if you honestly think that there will be a better fit for you somewhere, it is not likely.  Nor will you acquire a contract better in comparison to the one you were offered by the organization.

From insidepghsports

“Don Meehan the agent for winger Colby Armstrong is expecting a very strong market. Colby is seeking a four year deal. He wants to play in a hockey city.”

Thrshers fans, I’m sure you all beg to differ that Atlanta is not a hockey city. Sure, it may be a little warmer and a bit south, but let’s really think about what was said there.

On second thought, that’s another article for another time.

It’s very rough losing a guy like Afino because he seemed to find some serious chemistry through the line-up and had a very good bounce back season in 2009-2010. After two dismal seasons in Buffalo in back to back years, Afinogenov was signed as a try-out by the Thrashers this year.  He ended the season with 61 points which was second best on the team.

If it’s because he wants to go to Russia, well then there is no argument here.  However, if the KHL is purely a rumor and it’s just money, I hope the team didn’t attempt to low ball him.  He is due for a raise after the season he had.

As more news breaks leading up to Thursday’s opening of the market, it will be reported here.

New Bench Boss In Town

As if Rick Dudley is not busy enough, wheeling and dealing it seems the last order of business for the organization from a non-player standpoint will be completed as early as tomorrow.

Chris Vivlamore of the AJC sent out this tweet moments ago:

It looks like Craig Ramsay will be named Thrashers head coach, perhaps as soon as tomorrow.

Moments after Chris sent his tweet, John Shannon tweeted this:

Confirmed…Thrashers just working out final terms of Contract with Craig Ramsay as next coach of NHL team.

I for one must say, I am very impressed with the direction that Rick Dudley is taking this team in. Of course, on-ice product is much different from the black and white product, but Thrashers fans need to feel a sense of confidence heading into next season.

There are some other minor things that need to be attended to (Kubina, Afinogenov, assistant coach) but the bigger issues are now solved.

Busy day for the boys from Blueland.

But if all this has not been enough, the Thrashers are currently on the verge of completing another deal tonight in order to guarantee the Chicago deal goes through tomorrow.

Again, from Chris Vivlamore’s twitter account:

Another deal for Thrashers coming tonight. That should allow Chicago deal to happen. What a day!

The ATL has a lot to be proud of this evening.  Now, for the bigger suspense as is the draft floor and the potential deals that can take place.

And if Atlanta stands pat, who will they take at number eight? I still think they go defense. Possibly Derek Forbort as I’ve written about here on TrasherTalk.com.

At this point, only time will tell.

p.s. – John Torchetti is rumored to follow friend Rick Dudley and join Craig Ramsay as the assistant coach of the team.
